Blog experience

My experience writing on the blog was new, because I had never written such a long post in english before. I feel that my writing skills have improved, although I still have a lot to practice. I would like this activity to be the future involving the writing of essays or academic texts, to add technical and scientific writing in english.

In addition, I must mention the importance of english in our disciplines, particularly in archeology. Most of the texts that we must read are written in english, because the language is "universal", or because the pioneers of the discipline are english speakers. Therefore, to improve our english skills is indispensable to perceive as natural the scientific knowledge.

Finally, I perceived that the degree of this course increased refers to the other levels. I affirm this since I started from english 1 (Starter). This, given that it encourages interaction in english with other classmares; also, this blog implies, necessarily, focusing on increasing our fluency in writing skills. I have improved in all english skills since I started level 1, however, I must mention my individual effort outside the course and the university to level me in the language. Therefore, we must be constantly improving our english.

Archeoastronomy

I´m going to talk about archeoastronomy, my favourite subject of my career. This subject shows how past cultures understood the astronomical phenomena. If you understand it, you will be able understand the mind of other peoples, because that shows their worldview, their knowledge about space and time.

There were expositives classes. The first and sencond class was done by an astronomer. Those classes were about astronomy like science. The following classes were about archeoastronomy, with cultural and archeological aspects. The final evaluations were a exposition, reading tabs and a monography. The exposition was about andine astronomy; reading tabs about Cultural Astronomy, and monography about mapuche and aymara astronomy.

I think this subject is very intereseting, because it studies a symbolic area since materility. The knowledge of stars, like I said, let us to know the found  of worldview of other people. However, this is controversial because it is very difficult to know that only through material objects. For this reason, historical and ethnographic sources are usually used to support the analyzes.

Finally, the universe beyond our planet is an unknown area for all cultures, including modern astronomy, so it is interesting to know how other cultures, with a different way of seeing the world, understood heaven.

Rhapsody of Fire

In this post I will talk about other of my favourite bands: Rhapsody of Fire. This band was born in Italy, 1993. Their first EP Legendary Tales was released in 1997. This band plays symphonic/power metal, they tell us an epic history in each album. Their instruments are fast, harmonoius and melodic, and the voice is very versatile, it is can be clear, lyrical, high and gutural. The classic members of this band were Alex Starolopoli (keyboards), Luca Turilli (guitars), Dominique Leurquin (guitar), Fabio Lione (vocals), Patrice Guers (bass) and Alex Holzwarth (drums). In 2011 Luca Turilli, one of their founders members and compositors, leave the band for own proyects. Then, in 2016 Fabio Lione (vocals) and Alex Holzwarth (drums) leave the band, too. Today the members are: Alex Staropoli (keyboards), Giacomo Voli (vocals), Robert de Micheli (guitars) and Alessandro Sala (bass).

I like this band very much because they are very virtuous and magic. Their music travel through my hearth and imagination: when I listen them I imagine a wonderland where dragons and other creatures exist. Technically, they are grandious musicians. Those symphonies get with instruments and that beautiful and versatile voice, became to Rhapsody of Fire in one of the best bands in all metal history.

Museo de Arte Precolombino

Museo de Arte Precolombino

In this post I am going to talk about the page of the Museo de Arte Preocolombino: http://www.precolombino.cl

This page contains everything related to the Museo de Arte Preocolombino, as the exhibitions, the detail of the collections of their archaeological pieces; or information about the cultures exhibited in the Museum: period, social organization, economy, etc. In addition, it has audiovisual educational material, one directed for children, where it is shown with cartoons how the people lived, and other where shows the songs, stories and stories in the form of audio about these cultures.

Consider that it is a good page for anyone who likes archeology, in an academic way or as a pastime. I myself sometimes revised it to know specific things about certain peoples. A very complete and easy to use page, which allows a pleasant online journey through the timeline of our ancestors. It is for these reasons that I wanted to make a post about this page.

Twilight Force

This post doesn't talk about veganism or anthropology. In this moment, I want talk you about one of my favorite musical bands: Twilight Force. This photo was taken at 6th June, 2018; there the band present to new vocalist, Alessandro Conti, an italian power metal singer, very famous in the genre.

Twilight Force plays epic symphonic power metal, but they prefer to say it "adventure metal". That is because they want invite us to a fantasy world, where there are dragons, elves, dwarfs, brave warriors, wizards and many other creatures. Each member of the band is a character from the epic story told in his lyrics.

Why veganism?

In this post I wish talk you about why we should choose veganism like ethical principle.

The reason is non human animals feel, they have will and own interest. So, they are someone, not something: they are subjects. If we exploit them we are treating them like things. They are not exist to our wishes, they exist to own purposes. The other animals (I say "other animals" or "non human animals" because we are animals too) have our same basic interest like to live, to enjoy, to not suffer. If we apply the gold rule of ethics (do not do to others what you do not want them to do to you), we must respect those interests.

Veganism is an ethical principle that refuse the animal exploitation. Veganism is moral, it is not a diet or life style. In other hand, to exploit to other animals is not necessary because we can be totally healthy with a 100% vegetable diet. That it is support by nutrition science (*). Also, the industry of animal exploitation produces big damages to environment like water pollution, emission of greenhouse gases or deforestation (**).

Why I chose my career

Hi everyone.

In this post I'm goint to talk you about the reasons because I choosed to study anthropology mention archeology; then, about what I wanted study when I was child. Finally, I´m going to refer to my expercience in the university.

Well, I want to study this career because is a holistic discipline: you learn about natural sciences and social sciences. In adittion, the career have three mentions: social anthropology, physical anthropology and archeology. You must choose one mention in third year. Currently, I'm in third year and I choosed archeology mention. I want this mention given that I think study societies without more record that their materiality is very interesting. Of course, studying a past society without writing implies analysis of many areas: bones, tools, resourches, enviroment, textiles, flora and fauna, etc. Then, we must realize interpretations about this materiality, based on the theory and models in the discipline to describe these past societies. Also, you can build yours own models. So, in this last point is its character social science.

However, before I studied three month sociology, in this same faculty. I didn't want to continue because I thought anthropology was a carrer that could give me a knowledge in more areas. Other reason was I always wanted to study archeology. In fact, when I was child, I wanted to be veterinarian, astronaut and archeologyst. I would like to work in a musseum in the future, when I became in archeologyst.

Finally, I can say about my experience in the university that is a place where you can known about many things, not olny knowledge of your carrer, also about different people with different thoughts. It's a place where you can share ideas about the world.

About me

Mi name is Felipe Urrutia, I'm 27 year old. I was born on April 29nd 1990, in San Antonio, Chile. I´m from Rocas de Santo Domingo, Provincia de San Antonio, but now I live in Ñuñoa, Santiago, because I study in that city. I study anthropology in Universidad de Chile, currently in the archeology mention. I live with my parents in my house of Rocas de Santo Domingo, and in Ñuñoa, I live in an apartment with the owner and other two tenants.

I'm vegan three years ago. I think this veganism is the ethical approach we must follow today and the future, because it is just and rational. Exactly, non-human animals have our same basic interests (to live, to enjoy, to not suffer), so, applying the principle of equal consideration of ethics, we must respect those interest. But if we want respect to non-human animals, we must repel their expoitation, we must finish to consider them like our property. On the other hand, it is not necessary to continue with the animal expoitation: a vegan diet good planified is absolutely healthy, that is the position of nutrition science.

In this blog I will talk about these matters, relating them with anthropology.
